Component Code(s): 3278SUBJECT: THE WHEEL SPINDLES MAY FAIL ON CERTAIN 216 AND 226 SKID STEER LOADERS
PROBLEM:
Some of the 142-8724 Wheel Spindles may not achieve acceptable field service life due to improper heat treatment. The failure mode is likely to be a fracture of the wheel spindle under the inner race of the outboard bearing.
The 142-8724 Wheel Spindle is part of the 142-8758 Axle Gp.
SOLUTION:
If this failure mode occurs, inspect the remaining three axles as described below and replace the wheel spindles, as necessary.
Inspection/Rework Procedure
In order to check the date code on each of the wheel spindle flanges, remove the tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR4834, "216, 226, 232, and 242 Skid Steer Loaders Power Train", "Tire and Rim ? Remove and Install" for the proper removal and installation procedure.
After the tires and rims have been removed, check the date code that is stamped on the outer surface of each wheel spindle flange. See Figure 1.
Wheel spindles that have a date code that contains the letter "P" may not achieve not achieve acceptable field service life. Replace these axle groups.
Wheel spindles that have a date code that contains the letter "U" or that contain no letter in the date code will achieve acceptable field service life. Replacement of these axle groups is not necessary.
When reinstalling the tires, refer to Operation and Maintenance, SEBU7468, "216, 226, 228, 236, 246, 248, 252, and 262 Skid Steer Loaders", "Maintenance Section", "Wheel Nuts-Tighten" for proper torque values and maintenance procedures.
