Information:
The FMI 13 is activated when the ECM has determined that the steering position sensor "2" needs calibration.Multiple position sensors are required for correct operation of the steering control. Each sensor provides an input signal to the ECM that indicates the position of the steering control handle. The signal 2 receives power from the 8 VDC power supply circuit and the 8 VDC return circuit from the ECM. The position sensor sends a PWM input signal to the Power Train ECM. The position sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 500 80 Hz. The voltage of the signal range is from 0 to 5 VDC. The duty cycle of the signal varies from approximately 10 percent at the full left position to approximately 90 percent at the full right position. When the steering control handle is at the center position, the duty cycle is approximately 50% and the voltage is approximately 2.5 VDC.Note: Before performing this procedure, verify that no other CID 1472 diagnostic codes exist for the sensor. If any other diagnostic codes are active for the sensor, correct the problem before performing this procedure. Test Step 1. Calibrate the sensor
Perform the calibration procedure for the sensor. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR8908, "Calibration" for the correct calibration procedure. Expected Result:The calibration procedure was performed successfully. Results:
YES - The calibration procedure was performed successfully. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NO - The calibration was not successful.Repair: Repeat the calibration procedure for the sensor. If the second calibration procedure is not successful, replace the sensor group. After the sensor group is replaced, perform the calibration again. If the problem is still present after replacement and calibration of the new sensor group, the ECM may have failed. An ECM failure is unlikely. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your technical communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
