Consult with product support personnel prior to making any repair to the lip seal on the rear axle lubrication motor. The phone number for the 797 product support personnel cellular phone in Decatur is (217)-433-0798.In order to replace the lip seal, install the 175-6247 Seal Kit into the 173-5942 Rear Axle Lubrication Motor. Measure the seal bore of the 173-5942 Rear Axle Lubrication Motor. The dimensions should be:Diameter: 50.698 mm (1.996 inch) to 50.749 mm (1.998 inch)Depth: 29.972 mm (1.18 inch) (from pilot to bottom of pocket)Prior to installing the inner seal, coat the outside of the seal with 4C-9506 Retaining Compound. When installing a seal it is important to ensure that the seal is pushed just deep enough to allow the snap ring to snap into the groove. It is possible to push the seal in deep enough to damage the seal, especially if the distance from the bottom of the snap ring groove to the bottom of the pocket is less than the width of the seal.To minimize the possibility of crushing the seal, start the seal into the bore. Before the seal exposes the snap ring groove, put the snap ring into the bore and push on the snap ring and the seal together. Only push far enough to allow the snap ring to snap into the snap ring groove and then stop pushing. After the inner seal and the snap ring have been installed, install the outer seal. Prior to installing the outer seal, coat the outside of the seal with 4C-9506 Retaining Compound. When installing the 173-5942 Rear Axle Lubrication Motor it is possible to install the lubrication motor incorrectly. The words "Output" and "Input" are either cast or stamped into the body of the lubrication motor. When the lubrication motor is installed correctly, the word "Output" will face towards the right side duals and the word "Input" will face towards the differential.COPYRIGHT 2000 CATERPILLAR ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
