Illustration 1. Components of the 1U5753 Seal Starter.As an aid to correct assembly, labels such as 5D, 6D and 8P are stamped near the curved ends of the plates in the seal starter. The number indicates the tractor model and the letter indicates whether the plate is used as a pilot (P) or a driver (D) in the assembly. The pilot plates fit the seal's inside diameter while the driver plates push against the seal's outer ring. The reaction plates fit behind the shoulder inside the recoil spring housing. The 6V3009 Cross Bar or 8B7548 Bearing Puller Assembly shown in Illustration 1 is not part of the seal starter. Use the 6V3009 Cross Bar with the seal starter to install seals in D9L or smaller tractors. Use the 8B7548 Bearing Puller Assembly with the seal starter to install seals in D10 or larger tractors.
The 1U5753 Seal Starter was originally available as the fabricated tool, FT1976 Seal Starter. The 1U5753 Seal Starter is available through the Caterpillar Parts Distribution System.
Use the procedure that follows to install a seal with the 1U5753 Seal Starter.
1. Prepare and lubricate the recoil housing as directed in the appropriate Service Manual.2. Lay the seal on a flat surface. Adjust the pilot and driver plates to fit the seal and secure them to the center plate with the bolts provided.3. Assemble the reaction plates to the 6V3009 Cross Bar or 8B7548 Bearing Puller Assembly. Place the assembly behind the shoulder in the housing as shown in Illustration 2.4. Connect the reaction plates to the center plate with the two studs provided. Tighten the stud nuts so the seal is started squarely into the housing. When the seal is well started, finish the installation with an FT1965 Driver and hammer as shown in Illustration 2.
