Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
The 355-9048 Monitor Display Gp and 284-3011 Monitor Display Gp fail to connect to PCs via USB connection.USB Connections:Connection to the CMPD with Windows XP and Active Sync are fully supported by Microsoft. There are no known issues with the Active Sync Connection.Connection to the CMPD with Windows 7 and Window Mobile Device Center (WMDC) are not fully supported by Microsoft. Individual settings on a PC of the user appear to impact the connection. Exact settings that allow a user to connect or not connect is not been established. To increase chances of connection admin rights should be available and the computer should be connected to a network that allows for updates and driver installs to take place. Some users have had success using Window Mobile Device Center version 6.1.6965. Setting should include: "Allow USB Connection", "Automatic Network Connection", and "Allow automatic device authentication".If a PC is known to connect to CMPDs, yet fails to connect to a certain unit that unit may have an internal hardware failure. This chance is minimal and if multiple displays cannot be connected to then the PC should be investigated prior to condemning the hardware.Over the Air Connections:If a USB connection cannot be established or over the air service is required Cat® MineStar Onboard File Assistant is the preferred method for updating software versions and configuration files.FTP through third-party software. If USB connections fail and OFA is unavailable a third-party FTP client can be used with caution.Solution
When connecting to a CMPD using a 318-8840 USB Cable As or similar cable you receive a "USB Device Not Recognized" message, "Fail" message, or the display appears unresponsive. Perform the steps listed below.

Verify the integrity of the Cable.Pin 9 on the DT end should have continuity with USB position 4.Pin 10 on the DT end should have continuity with USB position 2.Pin 11 on the DT end should have continuity with USB position 3.Pin 12 on the DT end should have continuity with USB position 1
Disconnect the 318-8840 USB Cable As and wait for 30 seconds and reconnect. Wait 60 seconds for a connection to be established. Connections have been seen to fail multiple times before a successful connection.
Reboot both the CMPD and the PC and attempt to reestablish a connection.

Verify that PC settings allow for automatic connections in Windows Mobile Device Center an Active Sync. Ensure that the most up-to-date software is installed and any required driver updates have been completed.
Attempt to connect to another display. If the same issues are seen there may be a setting preventing access to the device. Contact IT help or Caterpillar support. If the connection to another display is successful replace the display.
