Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.

(1) Fuel filter drain valve and fuel filter drain fitting
(2) Front access door
(3) Fuel system primary filter (water separator)
(4) Top access door
(5) Fuel supply shutoff valve (reference)
The fuel system primary filter (water separator) is located in the compartment forward of the fuel tank on the left-hand side of the machine. Open front access door (2) and top access door (4) to access fuel system primary filter (water separator) (3).
A drain hose (not shown) is supplied to assist with draining water from the fuel system primary filter (water separator). The drain hose is stored inside of the compartment that houses the fuel system primary filter (water separator). Locate the drain hose.
Connect the drain hose to fuel drain fitting (1) at the bottom of the fuel system primary filter (water separator). Direct the opposite end of the hose into a suitable container.
Open fuel filter drain valve (1) on the bottom of the fuel system primary filter (water separator) and allow any water to drain from the filter (water separator) into the container. Close the valve and remove the hose.
Close the access doors.
The water separator is under suction during normal engine operation. Ensure that the drain valve is tightened securely to help prevent air from entering the fuel system.
