Portable Particle Analyzer Procedure
When using the 170-8500 Portable Particle Analyzer for particle counting, be sure to read and understand the Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0799, "170-8500 Analyzer Group" before operating the particle counter.

Attach the fabricated particle counter "low pressure in" suction tube to the S O S valve (14) on the filter cart. Refer to Illustration 15.Note: The fabricated suction tube can be made with the parts listed in Table 3 and as shown in Illustration 15.
Attach the other end of the fabricated suction tube to the "low pressure in" port on the portable particle analyzer as called for in the Tool Operating Manual.Bottle Sample Procedure

(14) S O S valve
(18) 169-8373 Bottle Group
If collecting a bottle sample, use the same S O S valve (14) and a 169-8373 Bottle Group (18). Refer to Illustration 16.
Record an oil sample reading from the S O S valve (14) on the filter cart at the beginning of the filter cycle.
Operate the filter cart until the portable particle analyzer indicates that the oil has reached an ISO level of at least 18/15. The final ISO should be recorded before the machine is returned to the field.Note: The filter cart procedure can be performed while running the engine.
During the filter cart operation, the engine must be run at low idle for 5 minutes every 15 minutes. Running the engine will cycle the clean oil in the transmission sump into the transmission system and flush more contaminated oil back into the sump. With the engine at LOW idle and the parking brake ON, shift the transmission into and out of third gear forward. Shifting the transmission into and out of third gear forward will cycle the transmission oil.
At the halfway point of transmission filtration, stop the procedure and change the filters.Note: Changing the transmission filters halfway through the filtration process avoids opening the filter housing after the system has been cleaned. If the filter housing is opened after the filtration process is complete, the housing becomes an inlet for contamination. The new filters can remain in place until the next scheduled filter change.
Refer to "Oil Compartment Filtration Times for 188-3242 Filter Cart" at the end of this document, when a portable particle counter is not available.
When the target ISO level has been met, close the air supply valve (13). Disconnect the air supply hose (12). Refer to Illustration 13.
Remove the discharge hose (10). Refer to Illustration 12.
Remove the discharge adapter assembly (11) from the transmission fill tube. Refer to Illustration 12.
Install the dust cap on the nipple. Install a dust cap on the coupler. Store the discharge adapter assembly (11) in a clean place. Refer to Illustration 12.
Install a clean transmission filler cap.
Disconnect the filter cart suction hose (9) from the suction adapter assembly (8). Install a dust cap on the nipple. Install a dust cap on the quick coupler. Refer to Illustration 10.
Place a drain pan under the bevel gear case
