Schematic of the Grapple Rotate Solenoid Valve (1) Grapple rotate solenoid valve. (2) Grapple solenoid return relay. (3) Power train Electronic Control Module (ECM).The CID 0451 FMI 06 fault diagnostic code is recorded when the current is above normal in the solenoid circuit. The power train Electronic Control Module (ECM) (3) detects the fault. Grapple rotate solenoid (1) is located at the rear of the machine.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code CID 0451 FMI 06 for the solenoid is active. Before you perform the following procedure, refer to Table 1 in order to determine the contact on the connector and the wire number that corresponds to the failed circuit.
Table 1
Information on Solenoid Valve
Connector Contact No. (1)    Wire Function    Wire No.
J1-7    Solenoid Return    K927-BU
J1-18     Grapple Rotate Solenoid Valve (Clockwise)     E855-WH
( 1 ) Connector contact of the power train ECM.Note: All the solenoid return lines are joined together. The lines connect to contact 87a on grapple solenoid return relay (2) (wire K927-BU).
Check for a shorted coil on the grapple rotate solenoid.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the suspected solenoid.
At the connector for grapple rotate solenoid (1), measure the resistance between contact 1 and contact 2. The resistance should be about 40 Ohms.Expected Result: The resistance is about 40 Ohms. Results:
OK - There is about 40 Ohms between the contacts. Proceed to Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance is not 40 Ohms Replace the coil on the suspected solenoid. STOP.
Check for a short to ground in the machine harness.
The key start switch and the battery disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
Disconnect the suspected solenoid and the grapple solenoid return relay from the machine harness.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 and the machine harness connector J2 from power train ECM (3) .
At the machine harness connector of J1, check the resistance between contact 18 and contacts 2, 5, 7, 15, and 16.Expected Result: Each resistance should be greater than 5000 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 Ohms. Go to Step 3.
NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness. The machine harness is faulty. The solenoid signal wire in the machine harness is shorted to ground. The short is between the solenoid and the power train ECM. Replace the machine harness or repair the machine harness. STOP.
Check if the fault is still present.
Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Start the engine.
Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System. Clear all inactive faults.
Attempt to operate the machine.
Stop the machine.
Check for the CID 0451 FMI 06 diagnostic code for the solenoid.Expected Result: The CID 0451 FMI 06 diagnostic code for the solenoid is active. Results:
YES - The fault has not been corrected. It is unlikely that the power train Electronic Control Module (ECM) is faulty. Replace the solenoid. Perform
