The crankshaft vibration damper limits the torsional vibration of the crankshaft. The visconic damper has a weight that is located inside a fluid filled case.A damper that is hot may be the result of excessive friction. This friction could be due to excessive torsional vibration or misalignment. Use an infrared thermometer to monitor the temperature of the damper during operation. If the temperature reaches 100° C (212° F), consult your Cat dealer. The 8T-2821 Temperature Recorder is recommended for monitoring the temperature of the damper.Inspect the damper for evidence of dents, cracks, and fluid leaks.If a fluid leak is found, determine the type of fluid. The fluid in the damper is silicone. Silicone is transparent, smooth, and viscous. Silicone is difficult to remove from most surfaces.If the fluid leak is engine oil, inspect the crankshaft seals for leaks. If a leak is observed, replace the crankshaft seals.Perform the first damper oil sampling at 15,000 service hours. Use sampling bottle and instructions, 436-0477 Oil Sampling Set. Damper oil can be sampled a maximum of ten times over the life of the damper. Oil reaches end of life when degraded by 30 percent or as recommended by analysis.Inspect, repair, or replace the damper for any of the following reasons:
The damper is dented, cracked, or leaking.
The paint on the damper is discolored from heat.
The engine has had a failure because of a broken crankshaft.
An analysis of the oil has revealed that the front bearing of the crankshaft is badly worn.
There is a large amount of gear train wear that is not caused by a lack of engine oil.For instructions on repairing the damper, refer to Guide for Reusable Parts, SEBF8175, "Procedure to Rebuild Vibration Dampers for 3500 and C175 Family of Engines."G3520H Vibration Damper

Illustration 4 g03802949The G3520H utilizes a Geislinger oil fed damper. The vibration damper is a spring coupled damper with an internal hydraulic damping system which limits the torsional vibration of the crankshaft. The fluid in the damper is engine oil, supplied through an oil supply hole in the crankshaft face.The oil flow resistance slows the relative movements of the two coupling members and dampens the vibration amplitudes.Radial arranged leaf springs (1) transmit the elastic torque from the damper inner member to the damper outer member. The torsional vibrations are damped concurrently by oil displacement from chamber (A) to the adjoining chamber (B).The leaf springs (1) are clamped at the outer ends between the intermediate pieces (2) due to a press fitted clamping ring (3). The inner end of spring pack (1) reaches into axial grooves of the inner star (6) and intermediate pieces (2). This arrangement engages the inner and outer members of the coupling. Chambers (A) and (B) which are formed by the intermediate pieces (2) and the spring packs (1), are filled with oil.
