Illustration 1 g03326533The CID 0168 diagnostic code is associated with the charging system voltage sensor. The FMI 03 diagnostic code is recorded when the system voltage is greater than 32.5 DCV. The solenoids may be damaged if the voltage remains high for an extended period.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
A charging system component has failed.
The harness wiring has failed.
The ECM has failed. This condition is unlikely. Note: If all of the machine control modules have activated a CID 0168 FMI 03 diagnostic code, the problem may be with the system voltage. The system voltage is provided by the engine alternator. If the Power Train ECM has activated the diagnostic code, the problem may be in the machine harness or a connector close to the ECM. Proceed to the test steps to isolate the cause of the problem.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SYSTEM VOLTAGE AT THE ECM
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
At the J1 harness connector for the Power Train ECM, use the 7X-1710 Multimeter Probes to measure the supply voltage. Insert the positive probe along one of the positive power supply circuit wire at contact J1-30 (wire 140-RD(Red)). Insert the negative probe along one of the supply return circuit wires at contact J1-13 (wire 202-BK(Black)).
Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.
Measure the voltage between contact J1-30 and contact J1-13. Expected Result:The voltage measurement is in the range of 18.0 VDC to 32.0 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage measurement of the Power Train ECM power supply is in the range of 18.0 VDC to 32.0 VDC. The system voltage is correct. There does not appear to be a problem with the engine alternator or the machine supply circuits. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The voltage measurement of the Power Train ECM power supply is greater than 32.0 VDC.Repair: The operation of the engine alternator is not correct. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0354 for further testing and repair procedures for the alternator or change the engine alternator.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Start the engine. Run the engine at low idle.
Determine if the CID 0168 FMI 03 diagnostic code has been activated again by the Power Train ECM. Expected Result:The CID CID 0168 FMI 03 diagnostic code is not active.Results:
OK - The CID 0168 FMI 03 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code may have been caused by a temporary condition that was corrected when the power for the Power Train ECM was cycled.Repair: Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0168 FMI 03 diagnostic code is active.Repair: Flash the latest version of software to the Power Train ECM.If the FMI 03 diagnostic code is still activated with the latest software, contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for a possible consultation with Caterpillar.If the ECM must be replaced, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control
