The shims can stay in cover (17) or on the thrust washer. Make sure all shims are found for assembly purposes.20. Remove shims (23) from the thrust washer. 21. Remove snap ring (24) with tool (B) from the input shaft. 22. Remove thrust washer (25), thrust bearing (26), thrust washer (27) and wave washer (28) from the input shaft. 23. put the input shaft and valve spool on blocks of wood as shown. Remove the needle roller from the input shaft with a punch and hammer. 24. Remove torsion bar (31) and spacer (30) from valve spool (29). 25. Turn input shaft (32) in both directions until drive ring (33) falls out. 26. With the valve spool assembly in a vertical position, turn input shaft (32) in a clockwise direction until ball (34) is free from the groove in the input shaft. Remove input shaft (32) from valve spool (29).Assemble Steering Metering Pump
Clean all parts with a clean petroleum base solvent and air dry. Do not dry with rags. Unless another indication is given, do not put oil on parts before assembly.1. Inspect all parts for damage, and make replacements if needed. 2. Install thrust washer (3), thrust bearing (4) and thrust washer (2) on the input shaft. Install snap ring (1) with tool (A). Make sure the ball is in the ball seat and not in the through hole opposite the ball seat.3. Install ball (5) into the ball seat in valve spool (6). 4. Install wave washer (7) on input shaft (8) over the thrust washer.5. Put input shaft (8) in position in valve spool (6) with ball (5) in alignment with the groove in the shaft.6. Slowly turn the input shaft in a counterclockwise direction until the thrust washer on the shaft makes contact with the valve spool. The valve spool must be in the "NEUTRAL" position before the drive ring is installed in the valve spool. The drive ring can be installed in the wrong position in the valve spool if the valve spool is not in the "NEUTRAL" position.7. Use torsion bar (9) as a gauge to put the valve spool in the center of its movement. This is the "NEUTRAL" position of the valve spool. Put the bar in position between the thrust washer and valve spool as shown. 8. Install drive ring (10) into the valve spool. Make sure the drive ring is engaged with the input shaft splines. A small rotation of the input shaft will engage the drive ring completely.9. Remove the torsion bar from the valve spool. 10. Turn input shaft (8) until it will not turn. Distance (X) must be approximately 8.890 mm (.350 in.). This is the distance between the end of the valve spool and the thrust washer. If the distance is not correct, the drive ring is not installed correctly. 11. Install spacer (11) and torsion bar (12) in valve spool (6). 12. Make an alignment of the hole in the torsion bar
