Caterpillar Machines Equipped With Air ConditioningProper tensioning of 1/2 inch V-belts improves air-conditioner compressor life. A 144-0235 Belt Tension Gauge should be used to measure the tension on the V-belt. A new V-belt should be initially tightened to a tension of 533 22 N (120.0 5.0 lbs). The new V-belt should be adjusted after 30 minutes of operation. The tension should be adjusted to 400 44 N (90.0 10.0 lbs). Belts that have been in use should also be adjusted to 400 44 N (90.0 10.0 lbs). Incorrect tensioning may lead to V-belt slippage causing the compressor to fail prematurely.
