Dipsticks With Full Range Readings
The crankcase oil dipsticks are not marked at the factory due to the various installation angles. The following procedure is required to calibrate the dipstick.Calibration
The 3516 engine is shipped without fluids. Use the following procedure to calibrate the dipstick after filling the engine with oil during the first start up.Refer to the 250 Hour interval of the Maintenance Management Schedule of this publication for the proper oil change interval. To establish the ADD mark and the actual FULL mark, use the following procedure:1. Fill the crankcase with oil to the correct level, (see the "Refill Capacities" chart, minus 38 L (10 gal). Run the engine to circulate the oil and fill the filters. Allow the oil to drain back to the sump for fifteen minutes.2. Remove the dipstick. Mark the actual level on the dipstick. This is now the correct ADD mark.3. Add the additional 38 L (10 gal) of oil to the sump. Allow enough time for the oil to drain into the sump. Again, check the level on the dipstick.4. This is the correct FULL mark on the dipstick. Mark the new FULL level on the dipstick. Remote mounted or auxiliary filters require additional oil also. For all information pertaining to auxiliary oil filters, refer to the OEM or manufacturer's instructions.5. Start the engine and operate until it reaches normal operating temperature. Stop the engine.6. Allow the oil to drain back to the sump for a minimum of 10 minutes.7. Remove the dipstick. The oil level should be near the FULL mark. If it is not, add oil until the level reaches the new calibrated FULL mark on the dipstick.8. Start the engine and operate until it reaches normal operating temperatures. With the engine operating at low idle, remove the dipstick. Mark the opposite side of the dipstick at the oil level. This is the correct FULL level for the Engine At Low Idle With The Engine Warm. Also mark "Warm" on this side of the dipstick.
