The differential is an arrangement of gears which enables one shaft to drive two shafts with equal torque. At the same time, this allows the shafts to rotate at different speeds.Such an arrangement in an axle enables the drive shaft to be connected to the wheels through separate axle shafts when the machine is turning. This allows the inside wheels to slow down. This also allows the outside wheels to speed up.The pinion and ring gear (15) are meshed. The pinion is driven by a drive shaft that is attached to drive flange (17). The pinion and ring gear provide the first gear reduction. The pinion and ring gear also provide a 90° turn in the line of drive. The differential case (8, 11) is attached to the ring gear and spider assembly (10). Four pinion gears (9) are mounted on the spider assembly. The pinion gears are free to rotate on the journals of the spider assembly. Two side gears (7, 13) are mounted in the differential case. The axle shafts are splined into the side gears. When ring gear (15) is turned differential case (8, 11) is turned. If the resistance between each of the road wheels is equal, the pinion gears (9) do not rotate on the journals of the spider assembly. The gears turn with the spider. This drives side gears (7, 13) at the same speed and with the same force. When the machine is being steered, the wheels on the inside of the turn are travelling a shorter distance. The inside wheels are forced to slow down. The wheels on the outside of the turn travel a greater distance. The outside wheels are forced to speed up.When a turn is initiated, the increased resistance is on the inner wheels. This forces the pinion gears to rotate on the journals of the spider assembly. At the same time, the wheels on the outside of the turn are speeding up proportionally. The wheels are still driven with equal torque, but at different speeds.Differential Lock
In adverse ground conditions, the action of the differential can result in lost drive time. Because the resistance under one wheel is so low, all the drive is transferred to that wheel. For example, if one wheel sinks into soft ground, all the drive may be transferred to that wheel. The wheel spins because of lower resistance. The differential has an arrangement which allows the differential to be locked. The lock connects the axle shafts together so that both wheels are driven at the same speed and with the torque. The differential lock system has a differential lock valve that is located at the left front side of the machine under the hood. The differential lock is located at
