Information:
This diagnostic code will occur if the selector spool for the ICM, the application code, and the software do not match. This diagnostic code will also occur if the Electronic Control Module (ECM) reads a speed signal from the transmission output speed sensor and the transmission is in stall mode. The possible causes for this diagnostic code are listed below:
The application code for the software is set incorrectly.
The incorrect selector spool for the ICM has been installed.
The TOS signal is incorrect or the signal is noisy.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 718 FMI 14 is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use the digital multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE SOFTWARE VERSIONNote: Check and record the latest software version for the machine electronic controls from SIS.
Verify that the latest version of software has been loaded to the transmission ECM. Expected Result:All of the software is current. Results:
OK - All of the software is current. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - There is a more recent software release that is available.Repair: Flash all controls with the latest software release. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program".STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE APPLICATION CODE
Verify that the correct application code is selected. Also verify that the selector spool for the ICM matches the application code. Application Code 18000 matches 261-3385 Rotary Selector Spool (8 Speed). Application Code 18001 matches 306-8039 Rotary Selector Spool (7 Speed with Stall). Expected Result:The application code should match the selector spool for the ICM.Results:
OK - The application code matches the selector spool for the ICM. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The application code does not match the selector spool for the ICM.Repair: Reprogram the application code in Cat ET.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE HARNESS
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Inspect the harness for the TOS sensor.
Check for the proper mating.
Check the exposed wires for nicks and abrasions.
Check for moisture, dirt, or corrosion.
Check the pin/socket for a proper fit.
Disconnect the machine harness connectors from the Transmission ECM.
Place a jumper wire between contact 1 and contact 2 of the sensor.
Measure the resistance from connector contact J1-6 (wire "710-GN") to J1-7 (wire "E987-WH") of the Transmission ECM. Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 4.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. There is an open in the machine harness.Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 4. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE.
Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.
