The CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is used by the Implement ECM as a "companion code" that is activated simultaneously with a diagnostic code from another control module in order to indicate that the Cat Data Link has an abnormal condition.The FMI 14 will match the FMI 14 that is activated for the diagnostic code from the control module. The FMI 14 means that the Implement ECM is communicating with the other control module. However, the Implement ECM is not receiving all of the expected information from the other control module.The CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code will never be activated by the Implement ECM as a stand-alone diagnostic code. The Implement ECM will only activate the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code along with one of the following module communication codes:CID 0296 FMI 14 - Transmission/Chassis ECMCID 0588 FMI 14 - Monitoring SystemCID 0590 FMI 14 - Engine ECMFor example, if the Implement ECM detects that some expected operating parameter information is not being received from the Transmission/Chassis ECM over the Cat Data Link, the Implement ECM will simultaneously activate a CID 0296 FMI 14 (Transmission/Chassis ECM) diagnostic code and a CID 0248 FMI 14 (Cat Data Link) diagnostic code.If the Implement ECM did not activate the companion diagnostic code CID 0248 FMI 14 along with the control module code, the technician would not know which data link circuit (Cat Data Link or J1939 Data Link) is involved.When the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is activated by the Implement ECM, always look for one of the control module diagnostic codes that are listed above in order to troubleshoot the problem.Perform the following procedure when the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is activated. Verify that the CID 0248 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1.
