Use Tooling (D) to install Duo-Cone seal (10) in wheel assembly (4). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install".
Lightly lubricate the contacting surface of Duo-Cone seal (10).
Use the following procedure to install Tooling (B) in the hole of hub (8):
Illustration 10 g00523302
Position the suitable lifting device in the hole of hub (8).
Illustration 11 g00523329
Install the bolt between the suitable lifting device and the hole.
Illustration 12 g00523332
Fasten the suitable lifting device to the bolt by tying the suitable lifting device around the bolt, as shown. This will prevent the bolt from moving during the installation of hub (8).

Repeat Steps 9.a through 9.c in order to install Tooling (B) in the two remaining holes.
Attach a suitable lifting device to the lifting slings. The weight of hub (8) and ring gear (9) as a unit is approximately 68 kg (150 lb). Install hub (8) and ring gear (9) in wheel assembly (4).

Lightly lubricate the contacting surface of Duo-Cone seal (7). Use Tooling (D) to install Duo-Cone seal (7) in spindle assembly (5). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo-Cone Conventional Seals - Install".
Install bearing cone (6) on spindle (5). Bearing cone (6) is a slip fit to the spindle.

Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of retainer plate (2) at each of the three small gauge holes. Average the three measurements and record the result.
Install retainer plate (2) without the shims. Apply oil on threads of three bolts (1) and install the bolts on retainer plate (2). The three bolts must be separated by 120 degrees.
Tighten three bolts (1) to a torque of 115 15 N m (85 10 lb ft).
Rotate the wheel by 360 degrees. Check bolts (1) and tighten the bolts (1) again, if necessary.
Loosen bolts (1). Rotate the wheel by 360 degrees in order to unload the bearings.
Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 20 7 N m (15 5 lb ft).
Rotate the wheel by 360 degrees. Check bolts (1) and tighten bolts (1) again, if necessary.

Use Tooling (C) to measure the depth through the three small gauge holes of retainer plate (2). Average the three measurements and record the result.
Subtract the average thickness of the retainer plate from the average depth. Refer to Steps 15 and 22. The difference is the gap between the end of the spindle and retainer plate (2). This gap is the required thickness of shims.
Use Tooling (C) to measure the shim pack. The thickness of the shim pack must be within 0.025 mm (0.001 inch) of the required thickness.
Remove bolts (1) and retainer plate (2).
