Use the following procedure to determine the correct number of shims that are required for the bottom bearing cage.Note: Do not install the O-ring seals onto the bottom bearing cage at this time.Note: Do not install the shim pack at this time.
Install bottom gear (23) into case (14). Rotate bottom gear (23) to ensure proper seating.
Install bottom bearing cage (12) onto bottom gear (23) and case (14) in the original position.
Install two bolts (10) and the washers into the bottom bearing cage (12) at the four o'clock and the ten o'clock positions, as shown.
Tighten bolts (10) to 30 2 N m (22 1 lb ft).
Rotate bottom gear (23) for two revolutions to ensure proper seating of the bearing.
Loosen bolts (10) until a gap exists between the bolt heads and the washers.
Torque bolts (10) to 11.3 2 N m (100 18 lb in) in alternating increments.
Rotate bottom gear (23) for two revolutions to seat the roller bearings.
Tighten bolts (10) to 11.3 2 N m (100 18 lb in).
Repeat Step 27.h and Step 27.i until bolts (10) do not move on subsequent torquing.
Use Tooling (B) to measure the average gap between bottom bearing cage (12) and case (14) at the three o'clock and the nine o'clock positions "W", as shown. Use this measurement, plus 0.178 0.02 mm (0.007 .0008 inch) as the required shim pack thickness that is used under bottom bearing cage (12). Record this measurement.
Remove two bolts (10) and the washers that hold bottom bearing cage (12) to case (14). Remove bottom bearing cage (12) from case (14).

Install O-ring seal (15) onto bottom bearing cage (12).

Use the amount of shim pack (18) that was recorded in Step 27.k. Position shim pack (18) onto case (14).
Install bottom bearing cage (12) onto shim pack (18) in the original position.
Apply Tooling (G) onto bolts (10). Install four bolts (10) with the sealant and the washers into positions "X".
Install the remaining four bolts (10) and the washers that hold bottom bearing cage (12) to case (14).
Rotate bottom gear (23). Bottom gear (23) should rotate freely.

Install top gear (22) into case (14). Rotate top gear (22) to ensure proper seating.
Install top bearing cage (13) onto top gear (22) and case (14) in the original position.
Install two bolts (10) with two washers into the top bearing cage (13) at the two o'clock and the eight o'clock positions, as shown.
Tighten bolts (10) to 30 2 N m (22 1 lb ft).
Rotate top gear (22) for two revolutions to seat the roller bearings.
Loosen bolts (10) until a gap exists between the bolt heads and the washers.
