Schematic for the Tilt Linkage Position Sensor
This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM determines that the signal for the tilt linkage position sensor is too low. The diagnostic code is recorded when the implement ECM reads a value that is lower than the calibrated value. The tilt linkage position sensor is a PWM sensor. The signal wire for the tilt linkage position sensor connects to connector contact J2-14 (wire H718-GY(Grey)) of the ECM. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
The rotation or replacement of the tilt linkage position sensor without proper recalibration may cause a fault. The position sensor could rotate farther than normal in one direction. The ECM would then record a FMI 01 code.
The tilt cylinder snubbing, and the tilt kickouts may not work correctly.
If the diagnostic code is active for three seconds, then the CID 0351 FIM 13 diagnostic code will become active.System Response:The machine response is listed:
The kickouts will not function properly.
The implements will function slowly.
Snubbing of the tilt cylinder will not function.
The calibration procedure for the implement valves may not function properly.
Full Rack Angle Control will not function properly.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code is active and that the diagnostic code indicator is active.Test Step 1. CHECK ADJUSTMENT.
Check the mounting hardware for the tilt linkage position sensor. The fasteners should be tight. If the hardware shows any sign of damage, the hardware should be replaced.
Ensure that the diagnostic code is active.
Observe the ON/OFF status of the diagnostic code indicator as the tilt linkage is fully tilted forward and the tilt linkage is fully tilted back. Expected Result:The diagnostic code indicator is inactive. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code indicator is inactive. The diagnostic code is inactive.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code indicator is active. The diagnostic code is active. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 2. CHECK THE DUTY CYCLE
Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.
Install a 9U-7330 Digital Multimeter with a 7X-1710 to the connector for the ECM. Connect the multimeter to contacts J2-14 and J1-15.
Start the engine. Raise the lift linkage to the mid-travel position.
Tilt the work tool to the full TILT BACK position. Record the duty cycle.
Tilt the work tool to the full DUMP position. Record the duty cycle. Expected Result:The duty cycle is between 10% and 90%.Results:
YES - The duty cycle is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The duty cycle is not correct.Repair: Ensure that the tilt linkage position sensor is moving with the tilt linkage.Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. RECALIBRATE THE POSITION SENSOR
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician to the machine.
Run the program for calibrating the tilt linkage position sensor.
Check for an active diagnostic code. Expected Result:The diagnostic code should be inactive. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code should be inactive.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code is still active. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. REPLACE THE SENSOR AND RECALIBRATE THE SENSOR.
The diagnostic code may be caused by a failed sensor.
Replace the sensor and recalibrate the sensor. See Testing and Adjusting, "Position
