Automatic Ether Starting Aid System Operation
The system uses an engine coolant temperature switch to determine whether or not ether should be used as a starting aid. When the engine is cranked and the coolant temperature switch senses cold jacket water, ether is injected into the engine intake air stream just after the turbocharger. When the jacket water is warm and the engine is cranked, the coolant temperature switch will not allow ether to be injected.
The ether injection is controlled by the three-position 8C9812 Toggle Switch Assembly in the cab. When the switch is in the "OFF" position, ether will not be injected regardless of engine coolant temperature. When the switch in the "AUTO" position, ether will be injected as long as the starting motor is engaged and the jacket water temperature is below 13°C (55°F). When the switch is held in the "MANUAL" position, ether will be injected as long as the jacket water temperature is below 13°C (55°F). The manual position normally is used to improve engine combustion after the engine has started and is still cold.
When the 7X1061 Ether Valve Assembly is activated, it releases the ether mixture from the 7X1062 Ether Cylinder Assembly. The mixture then flows through the 7X1063 Orifice Fitting Assembly which is threaded into the bottom of the solenoid valve (the 7X1063 Orifice Fitting Assembly has left hand threads). From the orifice fitting, the ether mixture is routed by tubing to 7X1078 Ether Nozzle Assemblies in the air piping on the pressure side of the turbochargers. The nozzles sprays the ether mixture into the intake air.

Be sure to observe the following precautions when servicing or troubleshooting the automatic ether starting aid system.
Ether is poisonous and flammable. Breathing ether vapors or repeated contact of ether with skin can cause personal injury.Use ether only in well ventilated areas.Use ether with care to avoid fires.Do not smoke when changing ether cylinders or when testing the ether system.Do not store ether cylinders in the operator's compartment or living areas.Do not store ether cylinders in direct sunlight or at temperatures above 39°C (102°F).Discard ether cylinders only in approved containers. Do not puncture or burn ether cylinders.Keep ether cylinders out of the reach of unauthorized personnel.
1. Check the contents of the 7X1062 Ether Cylinder Assembly and the gasket in the top of the ether valve assembly.a. Clean all dirt and foreign material from neck of the ether cylinder and top of the valve assembly before removing the cylinder. Protect the top of the valve from dirt when cylinder is removed.b. A full 7X1062 Ether Cylinder Assembly weighs 1049 g (37 oz) and an empty cylinder weighs 454 g (15.9 oz). This system is designed to use a 7X1062 Ether Cylinder Assembly which is 102 mm (4.0") in diameter. The cylinder clamp will not correctly secure a 76 mm (3.0") diameter cylinder. The valve assembly can be damaged if the machine is operated with a
