To put the bevel gear and shaft assembly in the center position and adjust the pinion backlash, use the procedure that follows:1. Install bevel gear and shaft assembly in the winch case.2. Install cage (11), and tighten bolts (10) to a torque of ... 55 7 N m (41 5 lb ft)3. Remove bolts (1) and plates (2). Loosen bolts (3). This will release the clutch. If the gears are not in alignment, correct pinion adjustments are not possible.4. The bevel gears must be in alignment before the pinion gear can be installed. With bolts (3) loose and the clutch free to turn, put the pinion gear between the two bevel gears. Push the pinion in as far as it will go to be sure the gears are in alignment.5. Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of ... 55 7 N m (41 5 lb ft)6. Install plates (2) and bolts (1). Torque bolts (1) to ... 55 7 N m (41 5 lb ft).7. Install manifold assembly (7) without shims or O-ring seal.8. Install pinion assembly (9) and cage (4) without the O-ring seal and shims (6). Tighten bolts (5) evenly until cage (4) makes contact with the winch case.9. While applying pressure on the manifold, measure the gap (clearance) between manifold assembly (7) and the case in four places with a thickness gauge. The average of the four measurements is the amount of shims (13) necessary to center the bevel gear and shaft assembly.10. Install the O-ring seal on manifold (7). Install the amount of shims (13) measured in Step 9 and torque bolts (12) to ... 45 7 N m (33 5 lb ft)11. Loosen bolts (5) approximately 0.76 mm (.03 in).12. While applying pressure on cage (4), measure the gap (clearance) between cage (4) and the case in four places with a thickness gauge. The average of the four measurements is zero clearance.13. Install the amount of shims (6) measured in Step 12 (zero clearance) plus additional shims (6) to obtain 0.25 0.12 mm (.010 .005 in) backlash. [0.127 mm (.005 in) shims is equal to 0.025 mm (.001 in) backlash.]14. Install the O-ring seal on cage (4), and tighten bolts (5).15. To check the free movement (backlash), install a dial indicator so the tip of the indicator is in contact with one of the teeth of the pinion. The backlash must be ... 0.25 0.12 mm (.010 .005 in) in the 57 Winch. Set backlash at .010 to 0.23 mm (.004 to .009 in) in the 54 and 55 Winches.
