The Sonic Tracker II uses sound waves to measure the distance to a physical surface.A transducer located in the bottom of the Sonic Tracker II generates sound pulses like a speaker, and listens for returned echoes like a microphone. When the transducer generates a sound pulse, it also starts a timer which acts like a stopwatch. The pulse travels away from the Sonic Tracker II at the speed of sound, gradually increasing in diameter.When the sound pulse strikes an object, a portion of the sound pulse is reflected back toward the transducer. When the transducer 'hears' the echo, it stops the timer. The Sonic Tracker II calculates the distance from the transducer to the object by using the elapsed time and the speed of sound. This process is repeated 40 times per second.The operator calibrates the system by setting an elevation reference to ON GRADE. The 'working window' is a zone which is 6 cm (2.4 in) above to 6 cm (2.4 in) below ON GRADE. When the distance measured by the Sonic Tracker II is within the 'working window', automatic control of the screed can occur. If the distance measured by the Sonic Tracker II is not within the 'working window', control is changed to manual and no signal is sent to the solenoid valve coil. When the distance measured by the Sonic Tracker II returns to within the "working window', automatic control resumes. This feature prevents sudden movement of the grade control cylinder when the Sonic Tracker II is moved from a reference such as a stringline or a curb.The Sonic Tracker II sends the measured distances to the control box. When the power switch is moved to ELEVATION and the AUTO/MAN/SURVEY (CAL) switch is moved to AUTO, the control box tries to keep the Sonic Tracker II at a constant distance (ON GRADE) from the reference. If the measured distance is not the same as the calibrated ON GRADE distance, the control box sends a signal to the solenoid valve coil to move the grade control cylinder until the measured distance equals the calibrated distance. The control box displays the TOO HIGH or TOO LOW symbols when it signals for movement of the grade control cylinder.If the reference is outside the 'working window', the LED flashes once every two seconds and one of the grade correction arrows flashes. No signal is sent to the solenoid valve coil. The arrow indicates which way to turn the grade correction knob to move the 'working window' to the reference.If the distance from the Sonic Tracker II to the reference is between 1.5 to 6 cm (0.6 to 2.4 in), the system is in the coarse correction zone.
