Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Raise the rear of the machine. Install Tooling (A), as shown. Lower the machine onto Tooling (A).
Release the system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "System Pressure - Release".
Remove the rear tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim (Rear) - Remove and Install".

Remove clip (3). Remove pin (2). Disconnect parking brake cable assembly (1) and position parking brake cable assembly (1) out of the way.

Remove bolts (5) and discard bolts (5). Disconnect rear drive shaft (4).

Disconnect hose assembly (6) from rear axle assembly (7).

Disconnect hose assemblies (8) and (9) from rear axle assembly (7).

Remove bolts (10) and remove cover (11). Repeat this step for the opposite side.

Secure rear axle assembly (7) to Tooling (B) with suitable chains. The weight of rear axle assembly (7) is approximately 545 kg (1200 lb).
Remove bolts (12), block (13), and rear axle assembly (7).
