Start By:
Remove the rear suspension cylinders. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rear Suspension (Cylinder) - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
In order to prevent possible personal injury, remove the nitrogen charge before the disassembly of the rear suspension cylinder.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.
Verify that the nitrogen pressure has been discharged from the rear suspension cylinder. Refer to Suspension Cylinder, Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR1496, "Rear Suspension (Cylinder) - Purge and Charge" for the correct procedure to discharge the nitrogen from the rear suspension cylinder.
Verify that the rear suspension cylinder is clean and free of foreign material prior to the disassembly.

If grease fittings (1) were not removed earlier, remove three grease fittings (1). Plug the threaded holes in the eyelets in order to prevent contaminants from entering the bearing cavity.

Use a suitable lifting device and a hoist to place the rear suspension cylinder in a vertical position. Support the rear suspension cylinder with a suitable fixture. The weight of the rear suspension cylinder is 381 kg (840 lb).

Remove two bolts (2), two washers and cover (3).
Repeat Step 5 for the remaining cover that is located on the opposite side of the rear suspension cylinder.

Remove fifteen bolts (4) and the washers from head (5).

Use a suitable lifting device and a hoist to remove rod (6) and head (5) from the rear suspension cylinder as a unit. The weight of rod (6) and head (5) as a unit is 224 kg (494 lb).

Use a suitable lifting device and a hoist to remove head (5) from rod (6). The weight of head (5) is 39 kg (86 lb).

Remove backup ring (7) and O-ring seal (8) from head (5).

Remove lip seal (9) and U-cup seal (10) from head (5).

Use a suitable lifting device and a hoist in order to position rod (6) horizontally on wood blocks. The weight of rod (6) is 159 kg (350 lb).
Remove wear ring (11) from rod (6).

Remove plate (12), and ball (13) from rod (6).

Use Tool (A) to remove two retaining rings (14) from rod (6). Use a suitable press to remove bearing (15) from rod (6).
Repeat Steps 12 and 15 for the head end of cylinder (16) (not shown). The weight of cylinder (16) is 172 kg (380 lb).
