Before the bevel gear group is installed in the carrier, tighten nut (7) on pinion shaft (3) . Check the torque that is needed in order to turn the pinion shaft. Refer to Table 5 for the proper rolling torque for the pinion shaft.
Tighten nut (7) or loosen nut (7) on pinion shaft (3) until the torque that is needed to turn the pinion shaft is achieved.
Install the bevel gear group in the carrier. Install the caps for the carrier bearings.
Install the adjusting nuts. Tighten the cap bolts for the carrier bearings to 100 N m (74 lb ft).
Put the carrier in a position so that the centerline for the axle is vertical and bevel gear (5) is on the bottom.
Rotate bevel gear (5) . Turn in adjusting nut (6) until you achieve backlash of 0 mm (0 inch). Back out nut (6) to the nearest lock position.
Advance adjusting nut (4) in order to remove any end play. Rotate gear (5) and tighten nut (4) until a heavy drag is felt. Release the tension from the adjusting nut. Finger tighten the nut in order to remove end play from the assembly.
Make an adjustment to nut (6) in order to adjust the backlash. Refer to Table 5 for the backlash value. Adjust nut (4) in order to remove any end play.
Tighten nut (4) in order to preload the bearings. Use a dial indicator to ensure that the bearing cone moves. Refer to Table 5 for the preload.
After the backlash and preload have been adjusted, check the torque that is needed in order to turn the pinion shaft. Refer to Table 5 for the proper rolling torque for the pinion shaft.
The contact pattern between the pinion shaft and bevel gear must be checked. Apply marking compound to three
