Inspecting Hoses and Clamps
Inspect all hoses for the following conditions:
Hoses which are cracked
Hoses which are soft
Outer covering that is chafed or cut
Exposed wire that is used for reinforcement
Outer covering that is ballooning locally
Flexible part of the hose that is kinked or crushed
Armoring that is embedded in the outer covering
Hoses which exhibit signs of leakage which are not the result of loose couplings or clampsReplace any hoses that exhibit any of the above conditions.Inspect all clamps for the following conditions:
Cracking
Looseness
DamageReplace any clamps that exhibit any of the above conditions.Inspect all couplings for leaks. Replace any coupling which exhibits signs of leaks. Each installation application can be different. The differences depend on the following factors:
Type of hose
Type of fitting material
Anticipated expansion and contraction of the hose
Anticipated expansion and contraction of the fittingsDue to extreme temperature changes, the hose will heat set. Heat setting causes hose clamps to loosen. This can result in leaks. A constant torque hose clamp will help to prevent loose hose clamps.Replacing Hoses and Clamps
At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Hot coolant and hot components can cause severe burns. Do not allow hot coolant or hot components to contact the skin.
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Personal injury can result from removing hoses or fittings in a pressure system.Failure to relieve pressure can cause personal injury.Do not disconnect or remove hoses or fittings until all pressure in the system has been relieved.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Caterpillar Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Prepare the machine for maintenance and allow the engine to cool. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Prepare the Machine for Maintenance".
If a coolant hose needs to be replaced, drain the coolant to a level that is below the hose. Drain the coolant into a suitable clean container. The coolant can be reused.
Replace any damaged hoses. Replace any damaged clamps. Note: Refer to Specifications, SENR3130, "Torque Specifications", "Hose Clamps" for information about selecting and installing the proper hose clamps.
Fill the affected system to the proper fluid level.
Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle. Check for leaks and make necessary repairs.
