3406E (1MM, 2WS) Truck EnginesIn November 1998 Caterpillar will begin shipment of 1999 model year C-10, C-12, and 3406E Truck Engines. A significant change in these engines is the new electronic control module, sensors and wiring harness. With these component changes the functionality of some of the existing service tools will change. The purpose of this article is to make service personnel more aware of these changes so they are able to plan for the future.
In early 1997 Caterpillar announced the end of the sale of the Engine Controller Analyzer Programmer (ECAP) hardware. The advance of technology in engine control systems was exceeding the capability of the technology within the ECAP hardware. The PC based tool, Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) provides the expanded capability for the support of electronic engines. Cat ET will be the primary service tool of the future. ECAP repair capability will be maintained until approximately year 2002, but Service Program Modules (SPMs) will not be updated in the future. While ECAP will support many functions on 1999 engines, as it has on previous engines, it will not support all functions. Truck engine data on SPMs will not be updated in the future. Over time, engine control software changes will reduce the usefulness of ECAP for truck engine support.
The Pro-Link tool will also have less capability relative to Cat ET as time goes by. The Pro-Link software to support the 1999 model year engines will not be available until mid 1999.
The following chart illustrates the compatibility of the ET Ver. 2.3, ECAP Ver. 2.3, and Pro-Link Ver. 1.07 to work with the heavy duty 1999 truck engines.
Pro-Link can be used as a communication adapter for flashing new software to the ECM. 1999 model year Cat engines will experience significantly longer flash time with Pro-Link vs. the Cat Communications Adapter.
