Engine Information
The 3500 engines are turbocharged and jacket water aftercooled with direct fuel injection. The engine has an SAE No. "00" flywheel housing with a main traction alternator mounted and aligned as a package. It also has a front housing flexible coupling drive for an auxiliary generator. This engine is designed and available with standard SAE rotation of CCW (counterclockwise when viewed from rear of engine). The Locomotive PEEC System was designed to provide electronic isochronous engine speed governing using a Woodward EG10P rack actuator. The system also provides traction generator excitation control and system diagnostics. The full range electronic governor controls the fuel injection pump output to maintain the engine power desired by the LOCO PEEC System. The Locomotive engine is equipped for wheel slip ramp rates (both up and down), and the LOCO PEEC System reduces power just enough to stop wheel slip and then immediately ramps up power at desired rate, rather than dumping all power before ramp-up. This is a major feature that most present locomotive governors do not have.Individual unit injection pumps, (one for each cylinder), meter and pump fuel under high pressure to an integral injection nozzle for each cylinder. The cooling system consists of an oil cooler and a gear driven centrifugal pump with four thermostats, located in the regulator housing, which regulate the engine coolant temperature.
Typical ExampleAn OEM or customer supplied water tank, remote fan drive and radiator system are used. The engine lubricating oil, which is both cooled and filtered, is supplied by a gear driven pump. Bypass valves provide unrestricted flow of lubrication oil to engine parts when oil viscosity is high or if either the oil cooler or the oil filter elements should become plugged.Engine efficiency and engine performance depend on adherence to proper operation and maintenance recommendations, and the use of recommended fuels and lubrication oils.Follow the recommended Maintenance Management Schedule with emphasis on air cleaner restriction, oil, oil filter, fuel and fuel filter restriction maintenance found in this publication.
