Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Place the hammer on 185-3208 Hammer Stand. Refer to FT-2639 for the prints for the pin that is required to hold the hammer on the stand.

Remove seal carrier (2). Use a suitable lifting device in order to lift the seal carrier. Refer to Table 1 for the weight of the seal carrier.

Remove two O-rings (1) on the top of seal carrier (2).
Remove one O-ring (4) on the bottom of seal carrier (2).
Remove seals (3) from the bore of seal carrier (2).
Remove O-rings (17) from the top of seal carrier (2).

Typical Example
Place eyebolt (18) in the end of piston (5).
Attach a suitable lifting device to eyebolt (18). Refer to Table 2 for the weight of the piston. Lift piston (5) from head (8). Check the piston for cracks or for damage.

Install two eyebolts on the outside of cylinder (13).
Attach the lifting device to the cylinder (13). Lift the cylinder. Refer to Table 3 for the weight of the cylinder. If piston (5) remains in cylinder (13), tap on the top of the piston. When you lift the cylinder, you must make sure that the piston remains in the head.

Place the cylinder on a surface that is solid and level.

Remove locator pin (15).
Remove O-rings (14) from the top of cylinder (13).
Remove O-ring (12) from the bottom of cylinder (13).
Remove seals (11) from the bore of cylinder (13). Note: Record the alignment of wedge (8) before you remove the wedge. The end of the wedge that is chamfered is positioned toward the top of the head.
Remove wedge (7) and seal (6) from the inside of the head.
Remove thrust ring (10). Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove the thrust ring. Refer to Table 4 for the weight of the thrust ring.
