Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.
Lubricate O-ring seals with the lubricant that is being sealed.

Position spider (14) on the shaft in the center of the flywheel. Soak two friction discs (10) in SAE 10W oil for at least one hour before installation. Install two friction discs (10) and two discs (9) to the housing in alternating order. Align the splines in the friction discs with the splines in the spider. Begin with a friction disc and end with a disc.
Install plate assembly (8) , spring disc (7) , and retainer (6) to the housing.
Install three bolts (5) and the washers that secure retainer (6) to the housing. Do not tighten bolts at this time.
Use Tooling (A) to center spider (14) , the discs, and the plate assembly in the flywheel housing.
Install remaining 21 bolts (5) that secure retainer (6) to the housing. Tighten 24 bolts (5) to a torque of 56 7 N m (41 5 lb ft). Remove the tooling.

Remove spider (14) from the flywheel housing. Position spider (14) to shaft (15) in the retarder.

Install two bolts (12) and the washers that secure retainer (13) and spider (14) to the shaft.

Install O-ring seal (11) to retarder (1) .

Use a hoist to position retarder (1) to the flywheel housing. Install 12 bolts (4) that secure retarder (1) to the engine. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 7 N m (37 5 lb ft). Remove the tooling.

Install bolt (2) and the washer that secures the clip and hose (3) to the retarder., End By: Install the engine. Refer to Disassembly and AssemblyRENR1461, "Engine - Install".
