The inputs describe the status of the machine systems. Two types of inputs exist. The inputs can be either a switch type or a sensor type. Switches provide an open, a ground, or a + battery signal to the inputs of the controller. Sensors (frequency, PWM, or voltage) provide a changing signal to the sensor inputs of the controller. Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor
The temperature sensor for the hydraulic tank oil informs the ECM of the temperature of the hydraulic system oil. The sensor sends an analog signal to the Implement ECM indicating hydraulic oil temperature. The resistance range for this sensor is 33,650 ohms at −40° C (−40° F)to 18.6 ohms at 150° C (302° F).Demand Fan Pressure Sensor
Illustration 4 g02571841The pressure sensor sends a signal to the Implement ECM indicating system pressure. The pressure sensor outputs a pulse width modulated signal. The duty cycle of the signal will vary in proportion to the system pressure. These PWM signals are inputs to the Implement ECM.Outputs

Demand Fan Solenoid
Illustration 5 g03890193The demand fan solenoid is a switch to ground input to the engine ECM. The fan speed is reduced to minimum when the temperature of the engine coolant and the hydraulic oil is low. When the temperature reaches a certain level, the fan speed increases to provide more system cooling. If the temperature does not decrease, the fan speed is gradually increased until the temperature returns below the target temperature.Data Link
The Cat Data Link is an input/output of the ECM. The data link uses the connector for the service port in order to communicate with the Caterpillar Electronic Technician. A data link connection is provided for the product link.Note: The control for the product link provides a global positioning system for the machine.The data link is bidirectional. The bidirectional link allows the ECM to input information and output information.
The ECM receives commands from Cat ET in order to change the operating modes. Cat ET will read the service codes that are stored in the memory of the ECM. Cat ET will clear the service codes that are stored in the memory of the ECM.
The ECM sends the input and the output information to Cat ET. Note: An electronic control module that uses the Cat Data Link will have a module identifier.Electrical Control
In the demand fan system, the speed of the fan and the output of the hydraulic fan pump is directly controlled by the engine ECM through a solenoid valve. The engine ECM interprets signals from three sensors on the machine. Then, the engine ECM sends a proportional amount of current
