Use a suitable lifting device in order to install pinion housing (4) on the carrier, as shown.

Make sure that backlash is present before you secure pinion housing (4) to the carrier. Install bolts (3). Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 300 30 N m (221 22 lb ft). Then, tighten bolts (3) for an additional 120° 10°.Note: Steps 77 through 87 are for setting the backlash and the pinion depth.

Move adjustment nuts (21) and (25) on the carrier to a position that maintains gear backlash and slight bearing end play.
Use a suitable torque wrench in ordertoslowly turn pinion shaft (12). Check the overall rolling torque with no load on the carrier bearings. Record the measured torque.
Oscillate the bevel gear and advance adjustment nut (25). Continue to advance adjustment nut (25) until there is no backlash. Back off adjustment nut (25) by 1/2 turn.
Advance adjustment nut (21) and check the rolling torque on pinion shaft (12). Continue to advance adjustment nut (21) until the rolling torque increases by 20 percent over the rolling torque that was measured in Step 78. This is the seated position.
Advance adjustment nut (21) until a rolling torque of 3.9 - 14.9 N m (34.52 - 131.88 lb in) is measured at pinion shaft (12). Advance adjustment nut (21) to the nearest lock position.

Mount Tooling (J) on the carrier, as shown. Measure the backlash at four places on the bevel gear at 90 degree intervals. Compare all readings to the specifications. The proper backlash setting is 0.40 0.12 mm (0.016 0.005 inch).
If the backlash is not within the specification, retract one adjustment nut and advance the opposite adjustment nut equally. This will maintain the bearing preload.
When proper backlash is obtained, tighten bearing cap bolts (26) and (28) to a torque of 1825 175 N m (1350 130 lb ft).

After the backlash adjustment and the preload adjustment have been made, the tooth contact between the pinion shaft and the ring gear must be checked. Use the following procedure:
Put a small amount of Prussian blue, red lead or paint on the teeth of the ring gear.
Rotate the pinion in both directions.
The correct area of tooth contact starts near the inside end of the teeth. The contact area should extend to a maximum of 50 percent of the length of the teeth. See Illustration 52 for the correct area of tooth contact.
If the area of tooth contact looks like Illustration 53, use the following procedure:
Remove some of shims (5) under the pinion housing.
Perform Steps 82 through 84 again.
Perform Step 85 again in order to check the area of tooth contact.
If the area of tooth contact looks like Illustration 54, use the following procedure:
Add some shims (5) under the pinion housing.
Perform Steps 82 through 84 again.
Perform Step 85 again in order to check the area
