Start By:a. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect" for the machine that is being serviced.b. Remove the upper drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive shaft (Upper) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.c. Remove the front drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive shaft (Front) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.d. Remove the center drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive shaft (Center) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced. Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Remove the drain plug at the base of the transmission. Drain the oil from the transmission into a suitable container. The capacity of the transmission is 85 L (22.5 US gal). 2. Remove the four bolts that hold guard (1) in place and remove the guard.3. Remove the eight bolts that hold guard (2) in place and remove both sections of the guard. 4. Remove the four cotter pins from hinge pins (3). Remove pins (3) from the transmission cover hinges and remove the covers. 5. Disconnect hose assemblies (4) and (5) from the transmission. Cap and plug openings immediately. 6. Disconnect wire harness plugs (8) and (9). Remove four bolts (7) that hold the wire harness connectors to the support bracket. Remove the wire harness connectors from the support bracket.7. Remove bolts (6) and (11) that hold wire harness (10). Move wire harness (10) towards the transmission. 8. Disconnect hose assemblies (12), (13) and (14) from the steering control valve. Cap and plug openings immediately.9. Disconnect hose assembly (15) from the parking brake valve. Cap and plug openings immediately. 10. Disconnect hose assemblies (16) and (17) from the steering control valve. Cap and plug openings immediately. 11. Disconnect hose assemblies (20) and (21) from the steering control valve. Cap and plug openings immediately.12. Remove the bolts that hold clips (18) and (22) to the transmission. Move the hose assemblies and clips away from the transmission.13. Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to the steering control valve. Remove three bolts (19) that hold the steering control valve to the transmission. Remove the steering control valve from the transmission. The weight of the steering control valve is 35 kg (77 lb). 14. Disconnect
