AllService Magazine SEPD0776, 21 March 2005, "". Disregard this article. Refer to the article that follows.Caterpillar certification of the machine Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS), Falling Object Protective Structures (FOPS), or Tip Over Protective Structures (TOPS) is provided to our customers after extensive design and testing has been completed. This certification process is designed to ensure maximum operator protection. The process requires Caterpillar to meet SAE, ISO, and EEC standards and regulations for the following:
structure strength/deflection
operator size
a safety zone (DLV) around the operator
operator retention
sound
vibration
visibility
ventilationWhen unauthorized changes are made that may modify any of the above, the certified structure may be voided. Some examples of changes that may adversely affect the cab certification are:
drilled holes in the ROPS, FOPS, TOPS, seat mounting or seat
welding on the ROPS, FOPS, TOPS, seat mounting or seat
mounting heavy objects using existing cab bosses
use of untested (per the standards) cab mounts
use of attachments that exceed the machine certification weight
use of a seat or seat belt other than listed as standard or optional for the machine (seat and belt must be pull tested in the cab)
installing monitoring screens etc... that invade the operator safe zone or interfere with visibility
any dents or deformation of the ROPS, FOPS, or TOPS structure
excessive rust of the ROPS, FOPS, or TOPS structure
use of uncertified / out of specification glazing materials
heat discoloration and/or grinding on the ROPS, FOPS, or TOPS structureRefer to Special Instruction, SEHS9824 or Special Instruction, REHS0034 for bonding and materials to use in mounting objects, under 9.08Kg (20 lbs), to the cab without jeopardizing the certification.Refer to Service Magazine, SEBD1587 or Special Instruction, SEHS6929 for additional information on these structures.Any questions regarding the acceptability of a proposed change should be directed through the Dealer Solution Network (DSN).Note: Failure to receive advanced approval from Caterpillar for items 1, 2, 3 and 4 will result in voided cab certification.
