Information:

start by:a) disassemble forward and first speed clutch assemblyb) disassemble reverse and second speed clutch assemblyc) disassemble third speed clutch assembly An inner disc (plate) is a smooth steel plate that does not have friction material on either side and has teeth on its inside diameter. An outer disc (disc assembly) has friction material on both sides and teeth on its outside diameter.
Put identification on all parts for correct assembly. One side of the forward and first speed plate carrier (clutch housing) and the reverse and second speed plate carrier (clutch housing) has seven outer discs (disc assemblies) and six inner discs (plates) and is the speed clutch. The other side has nine outer discs (disc assemblies and eight inner discs (plates) and is the directional clutch. The third speed plate carrier (clutch housing) has ten outer discs (disc assemblies) and nine inner discs (plates) and does not have a directional clutch. Put identification on the plate carrier (clutch housing) for correct assembly.
1. Remove snap ring (1) that holds the backing plate in the plate carrier (clutch housing). 2. Remove backing plate (2) from the plate carrier (clutch housing). 3. Remove outer discs (disc assemblies) (3) and inner discs (plates) (4) from the plate carrier (clutch housing). 4. Put the plate carrier in position on a press. Push down on the guide ring with tool (A) and a press to release the spring pressure against locking ring (5). Remove locking ring (5). Slowly release compression of the spring. 5. Remove guide ring (6), guide ring (7), compression spring (8) and guide ring (9). 6. Remove piston (10) from the plate carrier (clutch housing). 7. Remove seal rings (11) and (12) from piston (10). 8. Remove retaining ring (13) and needle bushing (bearing) (14) from the plate carrier (clutch housing).9. Make sure ball is free to move in carrier assembly (15).10. Use tooling (B) to remove the carrier assembly. Turn the plate carrier over, and disassemble the other side. The only difference is the amount of outer disc (disc assemblies) and inner disc (plates). Third speed clutch assembly has only one side with outer discs [disc assemblies and inner discs (plates)].Assemble Plate Carrier (Clutch Housing)
1. Make sure all the parts of the plate carrier (clutch housing) are clean. Put clean oil on the parts. Inspect all parts for damage and make replacements if needed. 2. If necessary use tool (A) and a press and install needle bushing (bearings) (1) in the plate carrier (clutch housing).3. Install snap ring (2) that holds the needle bushing (bearing) in place. 4. Install seal rings (4) and (5) on piston (3). Make sure the lip of the seals are toward the inside of the plate carrier (clutch housing).
Be extra careful during installation of the piston. Never use a hammer to install the piston. A damaged seal can be the result.
5. Install piston (3) in the plate carrier (6) (clutch housing). 6. Put guide ring (10), compression spring (9), guide ring (8) and guide
