Introduction
Use the following procedure to fill the pump inlets and the pump case in order to prevent dry start-up of the main hydraulic pump. This procedure should be used any time the pumps have been serviced or the hydraulic oil has been replaced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
To avoid system damage, make sure that the hydraulic pump is properly filled with hydraulic oil before start-up.

(1) Tee
(2) Case drain hose
(3) Delivery line for drive pump
(4) Delivery line for idler pump
Remove delivery line (3) and delivery line (4).
Fill the main pumps with oil.
Attach delivery line (3) and delivery line (4).
Remove case drain hose (2) from tee (1) at the case drain filter.
Install cap (D) on tee (1).
Remove filler cap from the hydraulic tank.
Attach tooling (B) to hydraulic tank. Attach an air supply hose onto tooling (B). Slowly apply air pressure up to a maximum of 50 kPa (7.3 psi). This procedure will pressurize the hydraulic tank. Note: Pressurize hydraulic tank slowly to avoid sudden oil spill.
Hydraulic oil will begin to flow from case drain hose (2). Stop pressurizing hydraulic tank when air is removed from pump case drain oil. Note: A steady non-aerated flow of oil must be achieved from the case drain line before the case should be considered purged of air.
Remove cap (D) from tee (1) and connect case drain hose (2) to tee (1).
Remove tooling (B) and install filler cap on the hydraulic tank.
Start the engine.
Place the hydraulic activation control lever in the UNLOCK position.
Place the engine speed at LOW IDLE position.
Raise the boom and hold the boom in this position.
Stop the engine.
Slowly lower the boom until the work tool is on the ground. Note: The boom lower operation will pressurize the hydraulic tank.
