D9L, D10 TractorsCaterpillar recommends that track link joints on D8L, D9L, and D10 Tractors not be completely filled with oil. During reconditioning of the link assemblies, the 5P2420 Testing and Lubrication Group is used to test the seals in the joint cavity and fill the cavity with 80W90 Extreme Pressure Gear Oil. Then, 17 3 cc (.8 .1 fl oz) of oil are removed from the joint to provide an air cushion inside the seal cavity.
One way to remove the oil was to use either the FT1803 Tip or a calibrated syringe. However, a more efficient method of removing the oil has been found. This is explained in the following procedure.
1. Use the 5P2420 Testing and Lubrication Group to evacuate the track link joint. After the maximum vacuum has been reached, release the vacuum button. Watch the vacuum gauge for 10 to 15 seconds. There should be no drop in the vacuum reading.2. Press the oil fill button until the needle on the pressure gauge stops moving. Release the fill button and watch the gauge for 10 to 15 seconds. No drop in pressure should occur. If there is a pressure drop, press the oil fill button again for 10 to 15 seconds. In some link joints, the oil takes longer to flow past the grooves in the thrust rings and fill the seal cavity. Repeat this procedure until no drop in pressure occurs. If vacuum or pressure cannot be maintained in the oil cavity for at least 15 seconds, the track joint must be disassembled and repaired.3. After the oil cavity has been filled with oil under pressure, press the vacuum button. Hold it down for approximately 5 seconds and then release it. The vacuum will remove the correct amount of oil for a partial filling of the cavity.
