--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Description of Change: New bearings and shims are used between the steering bracket on the frame and the steering arm. The new bearings have flanges that will prevent wear between the steering arm and the frame bracket. Shims are used to adjust the gap between the steering arm and bracket to a maximum of 0.7 0.6 mm (.03 .02"). This will help reduce vibration of the steering arm against the bracket which can cause wear.
Illustration 1. Location of new components in a typical steering linkage group.Adaptable To: The chart and Illustration 1 identify the new components in the steering linkage groups. The new components, when used together are adaptable to all earlier tractors and trucks. See Procedure To Install New Steering Linkage Components. Procedure To Install New Steering Linkage Components
Use the appropriate service manual module as a guide for disassembly and assembly of the steering linkage.1. Remove the steering arm from the steering linkage group on the machine.2. This step can be omitted if a new steering arm, as listed in the chart, is going to be installed. Machine the steering arm to the dimensions on the illustration for each machine. Be sure the surface texture of the machined arm meets the specifications shown on the appropriate illustration.
Illustration 2. Dimensions for machining former steering arms for 768C, 772B Tractors and 769C, 773B Trucks.
Illustration 3. Dimensions for machining former steering arms for 776B Tractors and 777B Trucks.
Illustration 4. Dimensions for machining former steering arms for 785 Trucks.
Illustration 5. Dimensions for machining former steering arms for 789 Trucks.3. Check the steering bracket assembly on the frame for wear. A worn bracket should be rebuilt to specifications. The surfaces of the bracket assembly that contact the new bearing should be flat to 0.13 mm (.005") total indicator reading (TIR) and meet the surface texture specification shown on the appropriate illustration.4. Machine the 45° chamfers as shown in the appropriate illustration.
Illustration 6. Dimensions for chamfers to be machined in the steering bracket on 768C, 773B, 776B Tractors and 769C, 773B, 777B Trucks.
Illustration 7. Dimensions for chamfers to be machined in the steering bracket on 785 and 789 Trucks.5. Put a light coat of 5P0960 Molybdenum Grease on the bore for the bearings in the steering bracket and on the outside of the new bearings.6. Install the new bearings in the steering bracket. The bearing flange should be flat against the inside surface of the bracket. See Illustration 1.7. Install the new or machined steering arm. Use the new shims as required to obtain a maximum clearance between the arm and the bracket of 0.7 0.6 mm (.02 .01").8. Install the link groups on the steering arm and adjust as shown in the appropriate service manual module.
