Move the machine close to the wall, as shown.Position the front wheels parallel to the wall in the direction of the excavation. Raise the rear of the machine in order to reposition the machine along the wall.Raise the stabilizer closest to the wall while you are trenching. Use the stabilizers to level the machine on slopes.Note: On steep slopes, consult your Caterpillar dealer in order to adjust the proper fluid levels.On steep slopes, use the loader or the backhoe to cut a level uphill slot for the wheels and for the stabilizer. If necessary, pile the cut downhill under the wheels and under the stabilizer in order to level the machine. Pile the trench dirt uphill from the trench.Finishing Straight Walls

Move the stick outward while you move the bucket downward in order to finish the farthest wall. Hold the bucket open and vertical.To finish the closest wall, lift the bucket upward and keep the cutting edge vertical.In sandy soil, use a platform under the rear tires and under the stabilizers. This will distribute the load more evenly and this will lessen cave-in possibilities.Moving the Machine Forward During Backhoe Operation
On level ground, the backhoe can be used to move the machine forward.
Raise the boom and move the stick inward.
Put the bucket teeth on firm ground.
Raise the loader bucket in order to clear the ground. Raise the stabilizers in order to clear the ground.
Release the parking brake. Make sure that the transmission is in NEUTRAL. Make sure that the transmission neutral lock is engaged.
Slowly, move the stick outward and move the boom downward in order to move the machine forward.
Lower the stabilizers and the loader bucket at the new position.

Note: On machines that are equipped with sideshift, ensure that the carriage is shifted to the center of the machine and locked before you proceed.
Engage the parking brake.
Move the direction control lever to NEUTRAL .
Engage the transmission neutral lock.
Raise the stabilizers and the loader bucket enough in order to clear the ground.
Move the stick to a vertical position and close the bucket halfway.
Apply down pressure with the boom in order to raise the rear wheels off the ground.
Slowly, move the swing lever in order to move the back of the machine to the left or to the right.
Slowly, lower the machine with the boom.
Lower the stabilizers and the loader bucket.Lifting Objects
To prevent injury, do not exceed the rated load capacity of the machine. If the machine is not on level ground, load capacities will vary.Use short slings to prevent excessive load swing.
