On-highway Engines: C11 (S/N: KCA1-UP) C13 (S/N: KCB1-UP)Introduction
Reference: Disassembly and Assembly, SENR9704, "C11 and C13 On-highway Engines"Reference: Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR9703, "C11 and C13 On-highway Engines"This procedure may be performed without removing the variable valve actuator from the engine, if there is adequate space for the tools that are being used. Read all of the steps. This will determine if the variable valve actuator assembly will need to be removed in order to replace the Valve As. Place the variable valve actuator assemblies upside-down on a flat surface if the variable valve actuator assemblies are removed from the engine.Note: If the bolts for the variable valve actuator are loosened, you must reset the lash for the variable valve actuator assemblies. Refer to the Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Variable Valve Actuators - Inspect/Adjust".Required Tools

Remove the wires from the clips on the front of the housing by depressing the grip and lifting the top. Unscrew the clips from the housing.

Remove the two bolts (1) from the Valve As with tooling (A) .
Mark the orientation of the Valve As with a paint stick. This is necessary so the new Valve As can be installed in the same orientation. Install Tooling (C) onto Tooling (B). Thread Tooling (C) into the center of the Valve As at location (2) until Tooling (C) is finger tight. See Illustration 1. Remove the Valve As .Note: Do not pry the Valve As out. Prying may damage the variable valve actuator assembly and the flange of the Valve As .
Carefully insert the new Valve As into the bore for the Valve As. The O-rings on the valve will keep the Valve As from being fully assembled by hand.Note: The O-rings are coated with PTFE and lubrication of the O-rings is not required.
Install the two bolts (1) in order to align the Valve As in the bore. Ensure that the orientation of the new Valve As is the same orientation that is in Step 3 prior to completing the installation.
Place Tooling (D) across the two cast bosses. Assemble the Valve As fully by using Tooling (E) from the valve to the plate. Ensure that proper alignment is maintained so that the O-rings are not damaged.
After the Valve As has been seated firmly against the variable valve actuator assembly, torque the two bolts (1) to 6 1 N m (53 9 lb in). Remove Tooling (E) .
If the variable valve actuator assembly has been removed, reinstall the variable valve actuator assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Actuator (Variable) Install".
