CAN Data Link Connections
The CID 247 - FMI 9 diagnostic code is used by the Implement ECM as a "companion code". This 247-9 code is activated simultaneously with another ECM diagnostic code to indicate that the SAE J1939 CAN Data Link has an abnormal condition. The FMI 9 will match the FMI 9 that is activated for the ECM diagnostic code. FMI 9 (Abnormal Update Rate) indicates that the Implement ECM has lost all communication with the other ECM.The 247-9 diagnostic code will never be activated by the Implement ECM as a stand-alone diagnostic code. The Implement ECM will only activate the 247-9 diagnostic code along with one of the following module communication codes:CID 296 - FMI 9 - Transmission/Chassis ECMCID 590 - FMI 9 - Engine ECMCID 1558 - FMI 9 - Implement ECM 2CID 2143 - FMI 9 - Implement ECM 3For example: if the Implement ECM detects that no communication is being received from the Transmission/Chassis ECM over the SAE J1939 CAN Data Link, the Implement ECM will simultaneously activate a 296-9 (Transmission/Chassis ECM) diagnostic code and a 247-9 (SAE J1939 CAN Data Link) diagnostic code.If the Implement ECM did not activate the companion code 247-9 along with the control module code, the technician would not know which data link circuit (Cat CAN Data Link or J1939 CAN Data Link) is involved. When the 247-9 code is activated by the Implement ECM, always look for one of the ECM codes that are listed above and troubleshoot that problem.Perform the following procedure when the 247-9 diagnostic code is activated. Verify that the 247-9 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1.
The 247-9 diagnostic code for the SAE J1939 CAN Data Link is active. Look for one of the active diagnostic codes, associated with the control module, that are listed at the beginning of this procedure. Expected Result:One of the control module diagnostic codes that are listed at the beginning of this procedure is active. Results:
YES. - One of the control module diagnostic codes that is listed at the beginning of this procedure is active.Repair: Go to the troubleshooting procedure for the active control module CID FMI diagnostic code. Perform the troubleshooting procedure for the SAE J1939 CAN Data Link circuit that is detailed for the control module in order to isolate the problem.STOP
