c. Install the remainder of Tooling (C) on the end of Tooling (B) as shown. While rotating the wheel hub/flange, tighten nut (20) with Tooling (B) and (C) to a torque of 1550 to 2050 N m (1140 to 1520 lb ft). Remove Tooling (C), (B) and retaining ring (15). 59. Install ring (19). Make sure the tang on the ring engages with a slot in nut (20).60. Determine the brake piston stroke as follows: a. Use the depth micrometer from Tool (F) to measure the distance from the end face of internal gear (23) to the face of brake piston (24) as shown. Record this dimension, and call it dimension (I).Dimension (I) i.e. 81.00 mm (3.188 in) b. Temporarily install retaining ring (15) in internal gear (23). Use Tool (K) to measure the distance from the end face of internal gear (23) to the back face of retaining ring (15) as shown. Record this dimension, and call it dimension (II).Dimension (II) i.e. 42.70 mm (1.681 in) c. Use Tool (K) to measure the thickness of backing plate/washer (16). Record this dimension, and call it dimension (III).Dimension (III) i.e. 9.00 mm (.354 in) TYPICAL EXAMPLE CALCULATION: d. Use Tool (G) to measure the thickness of each outer plate (17). Do not measure the total outer plate stack thickness. Record the thickness of each outer plate.Dimensions measured i.e. 5 Outer Plates (17) = each 2.50 mm (.098 in) Each friction disc (18) has a constant thickness of 3.50 mm (.138 in). The outer plate thickness is an empirical value. The piston stroke must be 2.50 to 3.50 mm (.098 to .137 in). Correct the piston stroke by changing the thickness of outer plates (17) to 2.00 mm (.078 in) or 2.50 mm (.098 in). Install the thinner outer plates on the back plate/washer side or the piston side.e. Determine the total thickness of the plate stack. Determine the piston stroke. 61. Install axle shaft/rod (14) in the rear axle housing. Make sure the axle shaft/rod engages with the rear differential. 62. Install thrust washer (13). The two tangs on the thrust washer face inward and fit into two free slots in nut (20). 63. Install a new O-ring seal at location (N) on sun gear (11). Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean oil.64. Use a press to install sun gear (11) in lamell gear (12). Install the sun gear until the spline shoulder make contact with the lamell gear. 65. Install sun gear (11) and lamell gear (12), as a unit, on axle shaft/rod (14).
The plate stack consists of five outer plates (17), four friction discs (18) and one backing plate/washer (16). The outer plates and friction discs must be installed in the proper orientation for correct brake operation. The outer plates and friction discs are installed in alternating order starting with an outer plate and ending with an outer plate. Outer plates (17) must be installed with the large and small tooth voids as shown in Photo D60387.
