Schematic Of The Steering Motor Speed Sensor 1Note: The steering motor speed sensor measures the rotation of the output shaft on steering motor. The steering motor speed sensor is located in housing for the steering motor.This diagnostic code is associated with the speed sensor 1 for the steering motor. The FMI 01 diagnostic code is activated when the electronic control module (ECM) detects a signal that is below the normal operating range. The speed sensor is a pulse width modulated (PWM) sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 0 to 15000 Hz. The sensor has an operating duty cycle of 50% 5%. The following conditions could cause this diagnostic code to be activated:
The mount for the steering motor speed sensor, is loose.
Steering motor speed sensor has failed.
Intermittent or poor harness / wire connections.
Mechanical devices are loose.
The ECM has failed. ECM failure is unlikely.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the 1469-1 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Note: Use a calibrated digital multimeter for the measurements in this procedure. System Response:The 1469-1 diagnostic code will be logged in the internal memory of the ECM.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SENSOR AND THE SENSOR MOUNTA proper mount for the sensor is critical for correct operation of the sensor.
Perform the following:
Visually inspect the hardware that is associated with the sensor mount. The sensor must be mounted properly and the mount must be secure.
Inspect the wiring for the sensor.
Visually inspect the sensor for damage.Expected Result:The sensor mount and the hardware associated with the sensor, is secure. There is no apparent damage to the sensor, or the wiring for the sensor.Results:
OK - The sensor mount is secure. There is no apparent damage to the sensor, the wiring for the sensor or the hardware that is associated with the sensor. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - There is apparent damage to the sensor, the wiring for the sensor or the hardware that is associated with the sensor. Or the sensor mount is loose. Repair: Remove the sensor from the mount. Replace the sensor if damage is found. Clean the mounting surfaces and install the sensor on the mount. Ensure that the sensor is installed correctly and securely. After the sensor is mounted properly, operate the machine in order to determine if the 1469-1 diagnostic code is still active. If the problem has not been corrected, proceed to the next test step. STOPTest Step 2. CHECK FOR POWER AT THE SENSOR
Do not disconnect the harness connector from the sensor.
At the back of the harness connector for the sensor, insert a multimeter probe along the voltage supply wire (contact 1).
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Turn the disconnect switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage from contact 1 to frame ground. Expected Result:The voltage is 8.0 DCV. Results:
OK - The voltage is 8.0 DCV. Proceed to Test Step 3.
