The Caterpillar Electronic Technician is a software program that can be used on an IBM-compatible personal computer.Reference: For more information about the use of Electronic Technician, refer to Troubleshooting, "Using Caterpillar Electronic Technician to Determine Diagnostic Codes" for the machine that is being serviced.Machine Preparation
Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.
Shift the transmission direction control switch to the NEUTRAL position.
Lower the bucket or the work tool to the ground.
Engage the parking brake.
Place blocks in front of the wheels and behind the wheels.
Allow only authorized personnel on the machine. Keep unauthorized personnel off the machine and in clear sight of the operator.
Shut off the engine. Note: This calibration procedure can be performed without a running engine.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the ON position. Procedure for Adjusting the Ride Control Activation Speed
Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before working on the machine.

Connect the laptop computer to service connector (3) in the cab. The service connector is located on the back wall of the cab to the right of the operator's station. Note: The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) will allow the engagement speed for the ride control to be adjusted in 1 km/h (0.6 mph) increments. The engagement speed may be adjusted between 2 km/h (1.2 mph) to 23 km/h (14.3 mph). The factory setting for the engagement speed is 10 km/h (6.2 mph).

Open the software program (ET). Select the "Transmission 988H" from the "ECM Selector" menu.

Select the "Service" menu item from the toolbar. Select the "Configuration" menu item.
The configuration of the ride control must be set to the "ENABLED" setting before an adjustment can be made to the engagement speed. Adjust the configuration of the ride control accordingly. Note: Activation of the software for the ride control without installation of the hardware for the ride control will introduce diagnostic codes for the ride control switch and the solenoid.

Highlight the option for the ride control activation speed on the configuration screen. Click on the "Change" button in the bottom left of the screen. Enter the new value for the setting of the engagement speed. Click the "OK" button.
Click the "Yes" button.
The value of the engagement speed for the ride control has been changed.
Close the software program (ET). Shut down the laptop computer. Disconnect the computer from the service connector in the cab.
