Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Engine Walk-Around Inspection
For maximum service life of your marine engine, make a thorough engine compartment inspection before starting the engine. Look for such items as fuel, oil or coolant leaks. If any leaks are found, correct the cause. Clean the engine compartment.Look for loose bolts, worn fan belts and trash build-up. Remove trash build-up and have repairs made as needed.Engine Pre-Start Checks
1. Inspect the coolant level. The level should be to the bottom of the expansion tank filler neck. On some systems, maintain the coolant according to the proper level indicated by a sight glass.After starting, operate the engine at slow speed until it is at operating temperature. Check and add coolant if necessary. 2. Measure the crankcase oil level. The correct oil level is shown between the marks between established during calibration.See "Refill Capacities" for the size of your engine crankcase.3. Disconnect any battery chargers that are not protected against the high current drain created when the electric starter engages.4. All guards must be in place. Repair or replace all guards that are damaged or missing. 5. Make sure air inlet shutoff valve is cocked open on both air inlets and inlet piping and filters are in place.6. Make sure fuel lines are properly clamped and tight. Check for loose fittings or leaks.7. Check for any obvious cooling system leaks or loose connections. Inspect the water pump(s) for evidence of leaks.8. Check for lubrication leaks, such as the front and rear crankshaft seals, crankcase, oil filter, oil gallery plugs and sensors, and valve covers.9. Check electrical cables and the battery for poor connections and corrosion.
