Make sure you read and understand the information in the topics Safety and Cooling System Specifications for all information pertaining to water, antifreeze and supplemental coolant additive requirements before you proceed with maintenance of the cooling system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.

Slowly loosen the radiator cap in order to relieve system pressure. Remove the radiator cap.
The drain valve is under the radiator. Remove the front bottom guard in order to properly access the drain. Open the drain valve. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
Close the drain valve. Fill the cooling system with a solution which consists of clean water and of cooling system cleaner. The concentration of the cooling system cleaner should be 6 to 10 percent.
Start the engine. Run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine. Drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.
While the engine is stopped, flush the system with water. Flush the system until the draining water is clean.
Close the drain valve.
Install the front bottom guard.
Add the coolant solution. See the following topics:

Start the engine. Run the engine without the radiator cap until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
Maintain the coolant level within 13 mm (.5 inches) of the bottom of the filler pipe.
Install the radiator cap. If the gasket is damaged, replace the radiator cap.
Stop the engine.
