New engine software needs to be installed on the products listed below. The existing engine software can fail to indicate a plugged fuel filter. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 02Jul2008 when scheduling this service.

Group Number 1
D6N XL, D6N LGP, and 963D
Use Cat ET in order to activate the diagnostic for the fuel filter switches under the Engine ECM configuration tool.
- Cat ET 2007A or prior versions: Change the value for both fuel filter switches from 17 to 88. See (Image2.1.1)
- Cat ET Versions 2007B, 2007C, 2008A, and 2008B: Change the value for both fuel filter switches to "Normally Closed (to ground)". See (Image2.1.2)
The latest version of the Engine ECM software for machines in Group 1 support the activation of the strategy used to monitor the fuel filters for plugging. The software listed in the Parts Needed is for reference in case the latest software is not currently loaded in the Engine ECM.

953D
For the 953D, the fuel filter switch activation is a two part process, both parts need to be carried out for successful activation. First, a previous version of the ECM software needs to be flashed and the switch activated with ET. Then, the current version of the ECM software needs to be flashed into the ECM.
Part 1
Use Cat ET to flash the Engine ECM with the following software part number: 309-6963 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp. The software for the ECM is available in SIS Web.
Activate the diagnostic for the fuel filter switches under the engine ECM configuration tool.
- Cat ET 2007A or prior versions: Change the value for both fuel filter switches from 17 to 88. See (Image2.1.1)
- Cat ET Versions 2007B, 2007C, 2008A, and 2008B: Change the value for both fuel filter switches to "Normally Closed (to ground)". See (Image2.1.2)
Part 2
Flash the Engine ECM with the following software part number: 320-3721 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp.
