Introduction
For Specifications with illustrations make reference to the SPECIFICATIONS FOR 815 & 816 COMPACTOR STEERING SYSTEM, Form No. SENR7527. If the Specifications in Form SENR7527 are not the same as listed in the System Operation and the Testing and Adjusting, look at the printing date on the back cover of each book. Use the Specifications listed in the book with the latest date.Steering Hydraulic System
The 5S5123 Hydraulic Testing Group is used to make the pressure test of the hydraulic system. Before tests are made, visually inspect the complete hydraulic system. Look for leakage of oil and for parts that have damage. For some of the tests, a magnet and a measuring rule (either for inches or millimeters) are usable tools.
When testing and adjusting the hydraulic system, move the machine to a smooth horizontal location. Move away from other machines and personnel at work. There must be only one operator. Keep all other personnel away from the machine or where the operator can see the personnel.
Visual Checks
1. Check the oil level in the hydraulic oil supply tank. Slowly loosen the tank filler cap and allow tank pressure to bleed off before removing the cap.2. Inspect all external oil lines, connections, cylinders and external valves for leaks or damage.3. Remove the filter elements and check for presence of foreign material. A magnet will separate ferrous metal material from non-ferrous metal material and non-metallic sealing material (piston rings, O-ring seals, etc.). If such contaminants are found, the damaged component must be located and repaired. The hydraulic system should then be flushed.Performance Tests
Performance tests of the steering system can be used for a diagnosis of poor performance and to find the source of oil leakage inside the hydraulic system. The oil must be at the normal temperature for operation when the tests are done. PROBLEM: Steering wheel hard to turn. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Mechanical linkage does not move freely.2. PROBLEM: Machine steers slowly in both directions. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Valve spool does not move enough.2. Relief valve setting is low.3. Failure or damage of pilot valve or flow control valve.4.
