PROBLEM: The current RPS (Cat p/n 180-6244) utilizes the sensing principle of a magnetic pickup device to determine flywheel rotor speed, the exact position of the rotor?s pole faces, and the amount of bearing vibration. It has been recently determined that this method of sensing can be very susceptible to static electricity and/or ground noise. This susceptibility may produce sporadic erroneous RPS Error Messages during the UPS Commissioning procedure, or during the normal running cycle.
SOLUTION: To provide a resolution to this issue, a new RPS device has been designed which utilizes a fiber optic sensing component. Through the use of fiber optics, the problem with static electricity and ground noise has been almost completely eliminated. The new fiber optic sensor also allows for a more precise signal to determine the flywheel RPM. This new RPS sensor is now available in a field retrofit kit which will be incorporated in all new UPS production models.
