1. Put bearings (8) and pinion (6) in position in the carrier.2. Install the retainer with enough of shims (11) so there is end play of bearings (8) that can be measured. Then add or remove to the amount of shims (11) until the end play of the pinion is ... 0.03 to 0.08 mm (.001 to .003 in) Turn the pinion slowly while the adjustment is made.3. Install the case assembly, differential assembly and bevel gear in the carrier.4. Put the carrier in a position so the centerline for the axles is vertical and the teeth of the bevel gear are toward the bottom.5. Install four of the bolts that hold retainer (2), without the use of shims (3). Make sure the bolts are the same distance apart. Tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 40 N m (30 lb ft). Then turn the differential to put bearings (7) in their correct position.6. Loosen the bolts for retainer (2). Tighten the bolts with fingers. Turn the differential and measure the amount of free movement (backlash) between pinion (6) and bevel gear (5). The correct backlash is ... 0.30 + 0.13 - 0.10 mm (.012 + .005 - .004 in) If an adjustment of the backlash is needed, remove the lock and turn ring (10) as needed. Then do Steps 5 and 6 again.7. With the use of a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between retainer (2) and the cover.8. Install an amount of shims (3) so their thickness is 0.03 0.03 mm (.001 .001 in) more than the gap measured in Step 7.9. Measure the end play of bearings (7).
